It’s never too early to start planning your Halloween party, especially if you want to do it right. Otherwise, you’ll end up with a cheesy costume party with chips and dip and scary tunes playing in the background. Before you know it, your guests will go trick-or-treating with the kids from your neighborhood. Trust me, it can happen. So, here are some of my tricks that can help you throw the most wicked Halloween bash.

Mind the date //
Once I made the mistake of throwing a Halloween party on Halloween and never again. It was a weekday and a lot of people didn’t show up. Those who did had to leave early because they had to go to work in the morning. So, don’t make the same mistake and pick a different date. In addition, you won’t have kids interrupting your party and asking for treats every couple of minutes.

Choose a theme //
By choosing a specific theme for your Halloween party, you’ll make sure that everyone shows up in a costume. Furthermore, the more creative you are with the theme, the more authentic your party will be. While you can go with a classic monster theme, you risk throwing a cliché party with a majority of people coming as vampires, witches, and ghosts. Since my friends and I are huge geeks, I chose a Lovecraft-inspired theme. It was a bit tough to pull it off, but it was definitely worth the effort. However, since there will always be someone who will show up without a costume, you should have several stashed away just in case.

Don't Forget the Invites //
Don’t wait two days before the party to invite everyone. Chances are that there will be other parties happening at the same time, so let people know at least a week in advance. You can design Halloween-inspired e-vites and send them to your guests. Make sure to inform them about the theme and don’t hesitate to emphasize that costumes are mandatory.

Play themed tunes and movies //
When coming up with a playlist for your Halloween bash, there are several things to keep in mind. First, Thriller is a must. Second, make sure to include songs that will fit your Halloween theme and upbeat tunes that will keep the party going. I always mix spooky tunes with crowd-pleasing music. This way, you’ll set the mood and keep everyone happy.

Another great trick that will help you set the mood is to play theme-appropriate movies. I played several Lovecraftian movies in the background just to add to the mood. Of course, the volume should be off the whole time. You don’t want for your wild party to turn into a movie night.

Serve Halloween inspired foods //
The freakier your food is, the better, so you don’t have to worry about not having the perfect cooking skills. You can make brain cakes from chocolate cake, marshmallow fondant and red jelly, chicken witch fingers, and chow mein noodle spiders. Of course, you cannot throw a party without delicious Halloween cocktails and gummy worm jello shots. For my party, I added food coloring to different drinks, which gave them a more potion-like vibe. There’s plenty ideas and recipes available online, but you can also find pre-prepared party food.

Find some fun Halloween games //
If you want to spice things up, you can introduce different Halloween inspired games to keep your guests entertained. While Ouija board and spirit-summoning are a classic choice, you can find plenty of other games, too. From scavenger hunts to a spooky game of adult hide-and-seek, you have a range of fun options.

Set the scene //
One of the most important aspects of Halloween party-planning is decoration. Since this will have a major effect on the overall party atmosphere, you should make sure that the decoration is theme-appropriate and authentic. You can make your own Halloween-inspired walls stickers, balloons and lanterns if you have the skill. I always leave this part to experts because I’m not that skilled at crafts. I always entrust this task to my favorite party planners in Sydney who always make sure that my party decoration is impeccable. So, if you’re planning a huge Halloween bash, you should consider seeking professional help.

With these simple tips and tricks, you’ll be able to plan the best Halloween bash ever.
