The Ultimate Guide to Simplify Your Life

Life can get pretty crazy at times, which is why it's so important to learn how to simplify your life!

Life can get pretty crazy at times, which is why it's so important to learn how to simplify your life!

I was writing down my daily to-do's in my bullet journal the other day and the list kept getting longer and longer...which made me feel more and more overwhelmed. Why am I cramming so much "stuff" into my day/life? Sometimes my brain feels like a Chrome browser with thousands of tabs open all at once.

We're adding to our to-do list before we even get a chance to drink our morning coffee. We shouldn't have to deal with the added stress of all the little things. We should be able to take control and simplify.

Here are some ways to get rid of all the excess in your life so you can focus on the important things.

A Messy Girl's Review of The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up - The KonMari Method

I used to think that there were two kinds of people in the world: those that are naturally tidy and those that would rather get a root canal than deal with a mess. It wasn't until I was recommended this book that I thought I could actually learn how to keep a tidy house. If you've never heard of The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, it's a book written by Marie Kondo, a Japanese organizing consultant. She's written multiple books about organization and this one has done extremely well around the world. It teaches you a unique process to transform your house by simplifying and organizing possessions.

I'm not the messiest person you'll ever meet but I'm in no way a clean freak either. I'm mostly just super lazy (at least I'm honest lol). I don't have clothes all over the floor or garbage overflowing from the bin, but I do have a basket full of clean clothes that should have been put away a few weeks ago and a collection of cardboard boxes by the door that is waiting to be taken to recycling.

Key Benefits of Keeping Your House Clean + Organized

This is a guest post was submitted by Amber Cross. Amber Cross is a small business owner from London. She writes cleaning and home improvement articles.

Clutter and grime slowly but surely are taking over your home, yet you lack the energy and will-power to do something about it? A bit of clutter here and there is hardly a problem and often is impossible to avoid. Yet, if your hallway is starting to resemble a hurdles racetrack and you find it difficult to navigate because you constantly have to step over things, it's probably time to make a few changes in your lifestyle. Clutter is said to have a negative impact on your productivity and even on your mental health. Don't believe us? These few benefits of a well-organized, clean home might change your mind.

The Easy Guide to Keeping a Clean House

I hate cleaning.

I'd much rather pay someone else to clean my house for me, but since I'm on a budget, that isn't a possibility. I also need to put my big girl pants on and learn how to keep a clean house on my own. I didn't always hate cleaning. When I was younger I used to love cleaning the bathroom (weirdo) and folding laundry.

There are so many positive things about having a clean house. It's easier to host get-togethers, reduces stress, and is just more appealing. It's not always easy or pleasurable to keep a clean house. With these steps, it's a heck of a lot easier to keep your house looking its best.

1. Get Your Tools Together

There are some tools that you need to keep a clean house. Then there are tools that aren't mandatory but make it easier to keep a clean house. You should have both.
Here is a list of the tools that you absolutely need in your "toolkit":
Mop + bucket
Broom
All Purpose Cleaner (I make my own - you can find the recipe here)
Paper Towel

Now here's a list of the additional things I use that makes cleaning so much easier:
Microfiber cloths (I either buy the small ones or buy large ones and cut them to size)
Swiffer Sweeper (both dry and wet cloths)
Swiffer Duster
Vacuum (the pet hair remover attachment is my favorite thing about my vacuum)
Mr. Clean Magic Eraser

Like I said, you don't need ALL of these things, and some of them might seem like a bit of an investment at the time. Things like the microfiber cloths just make cleaning up a lot easier than using a regular paper towel...and the Swiffer Sweeper dry cloths are a gift from the heavens when it comes to collecting dog hair.

A good thing to keep in mind is to store these cleaning products where you'll be using them. You don't need to keep the vacuum in the living room, but keep some cloths and cleaning solution under the kitchen sink, or in the bathroom. I do my makeup in my bathroom, so if I didn't keep some cleaning cloths and solution under the bathroom sink it would get pretty gross pretty fast! Keeping these tools where I need them ensures I get things cleaned IMMEDIATELY!

2. Create a Schedule

Having a cleaning routine makes keeping tidy a lot easier. Write down a schedule and put it up on the fridge so you don't forget. Soon it won't feel like such a chore and it'll just feel like something you do every day.

There are lots of posts about making a cleaning schedule that really helped me get started like this one, this one, and this one.

I know what you're going to say .... having a cleaning schedule sounds like the least fun thing ever in the history of the world. I get you, my friend, I get you. Just trust that once you start seeing how clean your house has become on a regular basis you're not going to want to let it get dirty again. You'll magically be transformed into a Monica (if you don't watch Friends you're probably confused ... and we're probably not going to get along).

For me, the most important part of my schedule is the things I have to do every day:
Wash the dishes (in reality this usually gets done every second day)
Wipe down the kitchen counters + sink
Wipe down the bathroom sink
Make my bed

Doing these things every day ensures that when it comes time to clean a whole room, it doesn't take forever. Luckily my house is pretty small so it doesn't take me long regardless.

My current cleaning schedule looks something like this:
Monday - Kitchen (I hate cleaning the kitchen, so doing it first gets it out of the way)
Tuesday - Bathroom
Wednesday - Bedroom
Thursday - Living Room + Hallway
Friday - Home Office/Spare Room

3. Declutter

Starting with a clean slate is the best way to keep your home tidy. Go through each room in your house and starting getting rid of all the stuff that you have no use for and find a place to put the stuff that's just laying around. We all have clutter - those clothes you cram in the top of your closet because you 'might want to wear them one day', those magazines you've read and don't know what to do with, notebooks + post it notes, decor that doesn't really match the rest of your house .... GET RID OF IT!

Get yourself some storage containers to hold things you want to keep but don't need right now, light seasonal decorations or extra sheets and blankets, or off season clothes.

When dealing with everyday clutter get some small storage baskets or bins to put things you're not sure where to put right away - like your purse, notebook, scarf, etc. Then, at the end of the day, put all that stuff away.

4. Make it Fun

Cleaning isn't exactly exciting. Make it more enjoyable by listening to some music or an audio book. I can't get through vacuuming the living room without taking a little dance break.

Giving yourself little rewards for cleaning is also a good idea. If I want a glass (or two) of wine on a Tuesday night I gotta give the tub a little scrub first.

If you're not used to being tidy, don't feel overwhelmed by all of this! Keeping a clean house isn't my favorite thing about being an adult, but it does have its advantages! You'll get the hang out of it soon enough.

If you're interested in learning more about living a clutter free lifestyle I highly recommend reading The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo. It will give you a whole new outlook on cleaning and help you become clutter free once and for all!

My 5 favorite apps

I'm not going to lie, I can't survive without my phone. Whenever I forget my phone at home I feel like one of my limbs is missing. I have everything on there and it's so easy to access. It's replaced my address book, my planner, my digital camera, my alarm clock....my phone does EVERYTHING!

There are many others like me, who needs this piece of technology to get through the day. Below I've listed 5 FREE apps that are a necessity to me. Of course, these aren't the only ones that I love, but without them, I'd be lost.

There are many others like me, who needs this piece of technology to get through the day. Below I've listed 5 FREE apps that are a necessity to me. If you're looking for apps to download on your smartphone, these are them.

Sol Calendar

Sol Calendar

This is my all time favorite calendar app. I think it's adorable, and it syncs everything together, and has a useful widget as well.
I searched the internet far and wide to find a good calendar widget for my Android. It's important to me that I have everything visible right on my phone and don't have to go searching inside an app. Not only does Sol Calendar have an attractive widget, I can also sync up all my calendars and my to-dos into one place. It can sync my Google calendar and tasks, Outlook calendar and tasks, Wunderlist tasks, and more. You can customize your tasks and appointments with cute little stickers as well, which is a plus!

Wunderlist

Wunderlist

This is another app that keeps me organized. I'm one of those people that would forget their head if it wasn't attached. With Wunderlist I can make lists FOR ANYTHING and set reminders for everything on my list. If I have to pay a bill, or pick up milk, I add it to a list and set a reminder to be sure I don't forget. It also has a really simple Android Widget!
The best thing about this app is that I can sync it on my phone, tablet, and desktop! I have what I need anywhere I go.

iOS

Google Photos

Google Photos

This app is a huge storage saver for me. One of the reasons I made the switch from an iPhone to an Android phone was because of storage. I didn't want to shell out the expense for an iPhone with more storage when I could just buy an Android phone and add an SD card to it to add more storage. If I had researched this more I might not have made the switch in the first place (although I'm happy I did - and also with my new Android phone I can't add an SD card anymore *sad face*). Having some place to upload my photos - JUST MY PHOTOS - is really helpful. This app provides unlimited high quality photo storage, I can search keywords on my photos, edit them quickly, and share them with friends and family. It's also really helpful because I use google for everything, so it just makes it that much more appealing to me.

theBerry

Update: theBerry no longer has a smartphone app, however, I've added a shortcut to their website www.theberry.com on my homescreen so I can still visit it daily.

theBerry

This is a must have app for me when I have some time to waste. If you haven't heard of theBerry, you're missing out BIG TIME. All I really have to say is, Shirtless Friday! Just get the app. Enough said ;)

Flipp

Flipp

This is a flyer and coupon app that saves you some time. You can view all flyers in your area in once place, get coupons, and even coupon MATCH. They show you how to get the best savings by telling you where the best deals are and what coupons you can use with those deals to save even more money. Who doesn't like to save money? You can even make a shopping list from this app, and 'clip' deals in each flyer to make them easier to reference when you're shopping or making your grocery list.

I try and discover new apps to use often, so you might see another list coming soon!

Planning my goal & the printables that will help me do it

I suck at a lot of things.

One of those things is planning. I love using calendars and finding printables online to help me plan my day, but my issue is following through once I've planned. I have to admit I've never written down my goals before. I've heard all about how writing down your goals and planning your execution of those goals can help A LOT! I've also heard dozens of people talk about how time blocking or just better time management has helped them get more stuff done!

One of my big problems is that I want to get TOO MUCH done. I have too many goals. There's so many things I want to start doing/learn to do. It's gotten to the point where I need to say "calm yourself, woman!"

I need to start one thing at a time and I need to do it right! After searching Pinterest, and blogs I follow, for printables. This is what I've found to help me on my way!

These monthly calendars from eliza ellis are adorable. I love how simple they are and she has them available with a Monday start, or Sunday start. I'm going to use this for my blogging calendar!

These calendars are  from Landeelu and they are also simple and gorgeous! I'm currently using these for my work tasks. We are given daytimers, but those aren't as cute as these are =)

These goal sheets from Scattered Squirrel are going to be a LIFE SAVER for me! I love all the printables from Scattered Squirrel. They are adorable and I'm going to use most of her printables to make my planning binders (post about this later).

I'm looking forward to becoming more accountable to my plans and my goals! Make sure you check out the blogs listed and get some printables for yourself  =)
